The South Dakota Discovery Center is dedicated to providing hands-on science learning through our exhibit hall, classes for children and families, and resources for educators and youth program leaders in order to increase science literacy.

We offer a wide variety of opportunities and services so that South Dakota’s children, families and educators have increased access to hands-on science exploration and fun.

Mission Statement

Empower all Peoples of the Great Plains through hands-on experiences that inspire scientific thinking.

Our vision is a society of curious, scientifically literate, and engaged problem solvers.

Founded in 1989 as a state Centennial project, our science center is housed in an historic building that used to be the power plant for the city of Pierre. Our facility makes a great backdrop for family portraits, senior photos and even wedding photos (regular entrance fees apply.)

The South Dakota Discovery Center (formerly the South Dakota Discovery Center and Aquarium) is incorporated in the state of South Dakota as a nonprofit organization. We are recognized as a tax exempt education agency by the South Dakota Department of Revenue as well as an exempt organization under section 501(c)3 of the United States Internal Revenue Service code. Our Form 990 is available for inspection by July 1 for the previous year.
